Chris Robinson has responded after a tense moment at a Black Crowes concert in Tampa drew boos from some fans and spread online.
The reaction began during the band’s May 31 show, when part of the crowd started chanting U.S.A. after a screen displayed the group’s crow mascot dressed as Uncle Sam. Robinson answered from the stage with a critical comment about the chant, which led to boos and some concertgoers leaving.
In a June 3 interview, Robinson said the moment was taken out of context and pushed into a larger argument online. He said he supports the right to speak freely, including for people who disagree with him.
Robinson also rejected the idea that his comments were meant as disrespect toward veterans. He said he would not dismiss people who have served or made sacrifices.
The Black Crowes are currently on their Southern Hospitality Tour, with more dates scheduled through the summer.
